  • Civic Engagement
  • Through its national civic engagement program, NULYP increases voter education, voter registration, and voter participation among young professionals across the country.

In support of the National Urban League's participation in the Unity '04 campaign.a non-partisan, national civic engagement and voter empowerment program that targeted the 2004 elections.young professionals took an active role in the field mobilization and training component, as well as the election-protection component of Unity's voter education and get-out-the-vote campaign. We educated and registered thousands of voters in preparation for the 2004 election.

Other ULYP civic engagement activities include the following:

    • For the past five years, NULYP has sponsored The Training Ground: A Next Generation Leadership Institute at the National Urban League's Annual Conference. The Training Ground brought together the best and the brightest of the next generation of leadership in the private, nonprofit, government, entertainment and activist communities. Each year, Young Professionals from across the country gathered for three days of nonstop dialogue, agenda-setting and networking.

The Training Ground Institute agenda featured political workshops and strategic plenary sessions focused on developing a YP agenda and increasing Young Professionals influence in the political process.
    • NULYP has now joined forces with Urban Influence Magazine - a nationally distributed Urban League publication targeting progressive African-American professionals with a message of wealth building via social change-and MOBE-Marketing Opportunities for Business and Entertainment-to expand The Training Ground into The Influencers Summit. The Influencers Summit is a dynamic new merger that promises to provide additional networking, civic engagement, and career and personal development opportunities for all who attend.
    • NULYP is also a partner with MacNeil/Lehrer Productions on their signature program, By the People, a civic engagement program. The partnership aims to energize and enhance the national conversation about America's role in the global community, via a series of local and national broadcasts, as well as corresponding events that demonstrate the relevance of foreign policy to local concerns.
    • Locally, NULYP chapters host issue forums, candidate debates, debate watch parties, town hall meetings, and voter registration drives to ensure that its constituents are politically involved.

    Previous programs included:
    • New York, NY - The New York chapter hosted a Presidential candidates forum prior to the Democratic primaries. Representatives from the opposing political parties discussed the issues and platforms of their respective candidates.

    • Greenville, SC - In partnership with the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, the Greenville chapter hosts regular political forums to keep its members abreast of local, regional, and national political issues.

    • Washington, DC - This chapter has partnered with several young professional organizations in the greater Washington, D.C area.
