A Message from Marc H. Morial

Marc MorialBy Marc H. Morial,
President & CEO, National Urban League

The National Urban League is pleased to welcome you to our new Equality! e-newsletter.  Here you will catch a glimpse of how your support of the Urban League Movement is making a difference in neighborhoods, in communities, in peoples’ lives all around America.

Working with more than 100 Urban League Affiliates, we were able to impact more than 52 million individuals last year . . . through school programs, job training, substance abuse prevention, voter registration, and civil rights achievements.  Yes, the numbers are heartening; still . . .

. . . each one of those statistics represents an individual whose importance far outweighs statistics in a report.

• It’s about a little boy in Cleveland, whose single mom was able to enroll him in a pre-school breakfast program -- because she’s working two jobs and was out of options when she came to us.“One life touched, then another, then another . . . because someone else cared.”

• It’s about a family in Los Angeles that managed to keep their home -- because the father of three found a job at one of our job placement fairs.

• It’s about a teenage girl in Houston, who decided to stay off drugs and try out for her school’s basketball team instead -- because one of our drug prevention volunteers got through to her.

Boys and girls get to grow up in a safe environment.  Men and women find work.  Families maintain their dignity.  Those success stories are what we’re proudest of, and some of those stories are presented inside this e-newsletter.

That’s the good news, of course.  But there is still so very, very much to accomplish.  Economic oppression continues to squeeze families in our cities, drugs and violence lurk outside front doors.  Injustice and racial division have not been vanquished.  Yet.

So we press on, one step at a time.  One life touched, then another, then another . . . because someone else cared.  We’re glad you care.  I hope you enjoy these articles, and I trust you’ll find them enlightening -- and motivating.

Marc Morial
