As Chairman of the Board of the National Urban League, I am pleased to welcome you to the new National Urban League website. We have enhanced our look and made it easy for you to browse our pages and find out about the work that the National Urban League and its affiliates across the country are engaged in to empower communities and change lives.
Through our website, I invite you to discover the deep, rich history of the Urban League, whose origin reaches back to the early 20th century, when in 1910, the organization was founded to provide social services in the areas of housing and jobs for the thousands of African Americans who migrated north with the hope of building better lives for themselves and their families. The Urban League answered the call then -- as it continues to do 95 years later, remaining steadfast in its mission to achieve social and economic parity for African Americans and other people of color. Today, with over 100 affiliates in 34 states and the District of Columbia, Urban League programs and services impact the lives of approximately two million people a year.
The website also highlights our research and findings on a broad range of issues that impact and are important to African Americans, providing timely and valuable data on the overall state of Black America. I encourage you to explore the site and learn about the many ways in which the National Urban League and its affiliates are working to try to make America a better place for all its citizens. And on behalf of the entire Urban League family, I thank you for visiting our website and for your interest in our work.
Yours in the Movement,
John D. Hofmeister
