About National Urban League Young Professionals

The Urban League is the nation’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream.

Mission

The mission of National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) is to engage young professionals in the National Urban League’s movement towards the achievement of social and economic equality.

Organizational Description

National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP), a volunteer auxiliary dedicated to bringing the next generation of leaders into the Urban League movement, serves as an umbrella over more than 40 Urban League Young Professional chapters across the country. Through these chapters, thousands of young professionals work to advance the Urban League agenda through community, corporate and social activism.

National Programs
Financial Literacy

The National Urban League has a long history of helping adults attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs, homeownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.

In support of these efforts, NULYP has developed the Know Your Money Economic Empowerment Program, a joint initiative offered by NULYP and Altria Group, Inc. Know Your Money is designed to strengthen African-American communities by helping young professionals develop effective money management strategies through a series of financial management classes totaling 12 classroom hours. Basketball legend-turned-businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson is the national spokesperson for the program.

Real World Education
The National Urban League is dedicated to ensuring that our children are well-educated and equipped for economic self-reliance in the 21st century. As young professionals, we recognize the incredible need to give back to those who will soon follow in our footsteps.

NULYP provides a forum to learn about the challenges facing our youth and to exchange best practices with other young professionals interested in strengthening the next generation. Each chapter is encouraged to initiate mentoring and other youth development programs through which our members can become positive role models for young people throughout our community.

Political Participation
For nearly 100 years, the Urban League movement has advanced the cause of civil rights by working to eradicate barriers to equal participation in the economic and social mainstream of America. Essential to this work is the cultivation of an active and well-informed young professional community, educated on the issues of the day and passionate about making its voice heard.

One of NULYP’s many political empowerment initiatives is the annual Training Ground, which brings together the best and the brightest young professional business, social and community leaders from across the country for three days of nonstop dialogue, agenda-setting and networking. Training Ground 2004 will take place during the annual conference in Detroit, July 21-25.

In addition to providing a forum for young professionals to learn about and debate pressing political issues, NULYP assists each chapter with developing and implementing programs to engage our constituents in the political process. Through voter registration drives, candidate forums, debate watch parties and other initiatives, young professionals are effecting lasting positive change on the local and national level.
