The
National Urban League has partnered with Honda Financial
Services* for the 6th year of an exciting program to
strengthen and empower the African-American and Latino
communities in 11 cities. National Urban League Young
Professionals (NULYP) chapters in Atlanta, Baltimore,
Birmingham, Chicago, Columbus OH, Houston, Los Angeles,
Philadelphia, St. Louis, Tucson, and Washington, DC,
will host Know Your Money,
an economic empowerment program designed for African-American
and Latino young professional between the ages of 21-40.
The program was developed in response to extensive research among African-American business leaders, community activists, media and other professionals that identified economic empowerment as a leading community issue. The program's goal is to provide participants an opportunity to develop effective strategies for managing their finances through a series of financial management classes.
Introduced originally in 2002 in five US cities
and expanded to include six additional cities, the
curriculum-based program is designed to strengthen
the economic foundation of the African American and
Latino communities and bring about systemic change
in attitudes about money and money management. By
helping to build the financial knowledge of young
African Americans and Latinos today, the program will
help to improve the future financial condition of
our communities as a whole.
Surveys conducted in the early years of the program demonstrated the enormous success of the program. Results revealed that 90% of course participants in each of the cities were starting to make positive changes in their personal money management as a direst result of the course, found the coursework invaluable, and would recommend the program to others.
Carla J. Cargle, author of financial empowerment books entitled Humble, Wise and Wealthy (2002) and The Financial Truth: the Road to Wealth Begins with You (2005), headed a team of university business professors in the development of the Know Your Money curriculum. Thanks to the partnership with Honda Financial Services, the 2006 curriculum has been enhanced and expanded to include a segment on auto financing, making it one of the strongest curriculums to date.
NULYP chapter leaders in the participating cities will manage the local execution of the Know Your Money economic empowerment program in collaboration with Urban League affiliate staff and the National Urban League.
