Overview

On Monday, August 29th, Hurricane Katrina and the flood affecting New Orleans, as well as other cities in the Gulf Region went down in history as one of the most catastrophic events on American soil. Nearly 1,000,000 Americans were displaced, thousands lost everything - livelihood, home, community.

The disaster was followed by an international outpouring of help. But much of the immediate efforts are over. Vouchers expire. Shelters close. Benefits run out. The recovery work is nowhere near complete.

The Urban League through over 100 affiliates is working to support and provide direct assistance to the survivors of the Katrina disaster. With over one million displaced citizens from the Gulf Region, the Urban League is doing its part to address the short and long term issues of connecting people to jobs and housing to help families rebuild their lives.
