City by City Efforts

Since 1910, The Urban League has grown to over 100 affiliate offices in 35 states, each uniquely situated to respond to local needs. We give help to one person, one family at a time. Here, from their on the spot reports, is a small sampling of what affiliates have done and are doing to help Katrina survivors rebuild their lives. To date, Urban League affiliates have helped over 16,500 Katrina victims.


Anderson, IN
Providing housing. Educating pre-schoolers.

Providing employment, food, clothing, utilities, identifications cards and temporary housing to approximately 500 evacuees.

Found housing for families even before the Convention Center opened. Raised over 1,000 pounds of food from local businesses in 5 days.

Baton Rouge, LA
Addressing the needs of the lines of people outside their doors every morning. Although the original New Orleans office was flooded with three feet of water, it has reopened in Baton Rouge and is currently delivering job training and counseling to over 500 evacuees.

Raised $40,000 for immediate relief efforts with Glory Communications Gospel 95.3 radio and spent the money on a tractor-trailed full of mattresses, cleaning supplies, water and food they drove to Biloxi.

Their One-Stop Assistance Center provides food, transportation, clothing, employment searches and placement for 2.500. Gave over $11,000 in financial assistance to 30 individuals and families whose money from the Red Cross and FEMA had run out.

From August 31 to September 30, helped over 2,000 evacuees and visited 200 families. By the last weeks of October, helped over 500 families find homes and work as well as immediate basic items such as toiletries, clothes and gas vouchers and more.
