The
National Urban League is the nation's oldest and largest
community-based movement empowering African Americans
to enter the social and economic mainstream. Critical
to this mission is the successful promotion of affordable,
and quality health care.
Minority communities have shorter life expectancies because
they are more likely to experience striking health disparities
such as higher rates of infant mortality, cancer, asthma,
diabetes, glaucoma, cardiovascular disease and HIV/AIDS.
Lack of access to health care and higher exposure to environmental
and occupational hazards are among the factors that contribute
to these disparities.
The National Urban League health agenda focuses on three
major areas 1) health research; 2) health advocacy; and
3) health promotion and education. This includes attention
to health access, quality and affordability issues and
a focus on disease areas where health disparities are
driven by lifestyle factors that can be controlled with
education and behavior modification such as the diseases
you can find on this website including diabetes, cancer,
substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS.
The National Urban League has designed this site to comply with the ethical standards and practices of the Health on the Net Foundation Code of Conduct for medical and health web sites.
