NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE STANDS FOR FREEDOM

Coalition of activists, civil rights and watchdog groups to rally for voting rights at United Nations on Saturday

NEW YORK (December 8, 2011) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial adds his voice to the growing outcry against the attacks on voting rights throughout the country.

The Stand for Freedom March in New York City on Saturday, December 10, will assemble at 61st Street and Madison Avenue beginning at 10:30 a.m. and proceed to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at 47th Street and 2nd Avenue for a rally at 12:30  p.m..

At the rally, Morial will address the attacks on voting rights which will suppress the votes of millions of young people, senior citizens and people of color.

“There is nothing more sacred to our democracy than the right to vote,” Morial said. “Our brothers and sisters have fought and died to protect that right and we will not stand by while it is attacked.”

The march and rally coincide with United Nations Human Rights Day.  The coalition includes the NAACP, SEIU 1199, National Action Network, UFT, the New York Civil Liberties Union, the National Council of La Raza, Advancement Project, the Asian American Legal Defense Fund, the Hispanic Federation and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
