Mature Worker Program
The National Urban League’s Mature Worker Program (MWP) is funded by the Department of Labor (DOL) to serve persons age 55 and older that are unemployed and have low-incomes. The program goals include placing participants in part-time community service training positions that enhance their skills, enabling them to transition into unsubsidized jobs.
The goal of the Mature Worker Program is to increase the number of mature workers who will enjoy the benefits of full/part-time employment in the private sector by:
• Fostering and promoting part-time training opportunities in community service agencies
• Fostering self-confidence leading to economic self-sufficiency
• Providing job readiness training that includes:
> Counseling
> Assessment
> Individual employment planning
> Computer literacy
> Resume preparation
> Preparation for employment interviews
> Specialized classroom training
> Job placement and retention services
Employers spend countless hours and funds training workers and replacing those who quit. MWP participants come to the job prepared to work. MWP provides short-term on-the-job experience (OJE), enabling employers to see that referred participants are job ready.
As a result, MWP participants are dependable and responsible, ready to get the job done every day. They are adaptable, eager to work and willing to learn new skills. Mature workers are hard working, loyal, dependable workers; seeking long-term relationships with their employers.
MWP currently serves a total of 1,800 participants annually, in:
