February 2010 Unemployment Rate Unchanged From Previous Month

The unemployment rate was unchanged in February at 9.7%, representing a total of 14.9 million people without work. The ranks of long-term unemployed was also unchanged at 41.2% of all unemployed. Black unemployment was 15.8% -- a decline of 0.7 percentage points from the January rate of 16.5%. White unemployment was 8.8% and Latino unemployment was 12.4%. Four sectors saw jobs growth in February -- professional and business services (51,000), education and health (32,100) and leisure/hospitality (7,000). Construction led job losses in February, losing 61,000 jobs. Government reached second place in jobs losses in February, losing 18,000 jobs.
