Digital Television Transition - UPDATED

On June 12, 2009 (originally February 17), all those who watch broadcast television and do not have cable, a digital TV or a converter box will no longer be able to view their favorite shows, news, educational and other programming. Congress has mandated (through the Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005) that large broadcasters end their traditional analog broadcasts and instead use exclusively digital signals after that day. To ease the transition, Congress provided up to $1.5 billion to provide $40 coupons for households to purchase converter boxes but only $5 million for outreach efforts. Demand is strong; at the beginning of 2009 the NTIA (who administers the program) was receiving over 150,000 applications a day and there were 3.2 million requests on the waiting list. For more information or to get a coupon, go to www.dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009 (388-2009).
