MEDIA ADVISORY
National Urban League's NULITES Leadership Summit to Feature IT Business Development Contest, Tobacco-Free Health Rally During Annual Conference Week in Atlanta, Ga.
WHAT:
: The National Urban League Incentives To Excel and Succeed (NULITES) youth initiative will feature three events open to the public during its annual youth leadership summit that will run concurrently with the annual conference.
Launched in 1989, NULITES, with 57 official chapters associated with Urban League affiliates in 26 states, aims to promote and maintain high standards of wellbeing and character among young people. Every year, it holds a leadership summit on the campus of a historically black college or university near the site of the National Urban League's annual conference. This year's summit will occur on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology.
This year's events include the following:
1. Sponsored by Microsoft, the "Making the Business: Youth IT Challenge Finale" features NULITES members from across the nation competing for prizes over the best business ideas that leverage information technology. The contest is the culmination of a 10-week program designed to inspire minority IT entrepreneurs, teach them how to use technology to create a business and help them learn the elements of creating a sellable business plan.
The event, which will feature appearances by actors Jason Weaver and Chrystee Pharris, will take place on Thursday July 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ferst Center for the Arts on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology.
2. Sponsored by Burger King, a play entitled "You Don't Know Me" chronicles the lives of three urban youth growing up in the foster care system and their journey to becoming successful and making the cover of Time magazine.
The play will run on Friday July 28 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center at 395 Piedmont Avenue, N.E.
3. African American Partners for a Tobacco-Free Society will hold a community rally urging adults and young people to take command of their lives by embracing healthier lifestyles. It will feature video and musical entertainment, theatrical performances, speakers and a panel discussion regarding health disparities in the African-American community.
The rally will occur on Saturday July 29 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Sydney J. Marcus Theater at the Georgia World Congress Center.
