Thousands of National Urban League Young Professionals to Join With Citigroup to Volunteer in Third Annual "National Day of Service" to Educate Youth in Financial Empowerment
NULYP to hold Community Events, Financial Empowerment Seminars, and More
New York, N.Y. - June 24, 2006 -
Thousands of young African American professionals will lend their voices, time and resources to provide personal
financial education, when the National Urban League Young Professionals hold their third "NULYP National Day of Service"
on Saturday, June 24, 2006. Over 40 NULYP chapters nationwide will participate in community service events focused on
supporting the communities nationwide by educating youth in the area of savings, credit, money management and more using
Financial Education curriculums provided by Citigroup.
"The National Urban League Young Professionals represent the next generation of African American leaders, entrepreneurs
and civil servants who are not only committed to making a difference in urban communities, but are helping to re-energize
the Urban League movement," said Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League.
"At Citigroup, we believe that strong financial education programs raise the quality of life for individuals,
families and institutions and strengthen communities around the world." Said Eric Eve, Senior Vice President,
of Community Relations for Citigroup's Global Consumer Group. "We are pleased to take part in the National
Day of Service to inspire and educate thousands of young people to become more knowledgeable about their
personal finances. Through our participation with NUL, we strengthen our commitment to make communities
better because we are there."
The NULYP National Day of Service targets African American youth between the ages of 12 and 18 and hopes
to deliver focused education to at least 5,000 youth on the importance of financial responsibility.
The initiative also hopes to promote volunteerism amongst young African-American professionals in support
of Financial Empowerment. In addition to numerous community activities, financial education literature
will be distributed to local media and community service organizations to increase public awareness.
"Our movement is not about public accommodations it is about access to opportunity and being prepared
when that opportunity presents it self. That is what our National Day of Service is about, preparing
our most vulnerable for the opportunities their futures are sure to bring. And we are especially
excited to work with Citigroup this year, a corporation that understands educating youth on finances
can only strengthen our economic future." said Nolan V. Rollins, President,
National Urban League Young Professionals.
NULYP and Citigroup are sponsoring the national day of service as part of "The NULYP National Financial
Empowerment Agenda." This is in support of the National Urban League's 5-point empowerment agenda.
The National Urban League Young Professionals is a volunteer auxiliary group of the National Urban
League whose members range in ages 21-40. This network of Young Professionals is composed of over
55 chapters working to advance the Urban League agenda through corporate, social and community activism
