National Urban League Mourns the Loss of Coretta Scott King
Statement by National Urban League President Marc H. Morial
New York, N.Y. - January 31, 2006 - The National Urban League, its staff, its more than 100 affiliates, mourns the loss of Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King Jr., who died today at age 78.
"Our condolences and prayers go out to her family, her friends and each of the people whose lives she touched, whether personally or through her work in leading the charge for a national holiday in honor of her husband and in founding of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change in Atlanta," National Urban League President Marc H. Morial said today.
"Coretta Scott King worked tirelessly to keep her husband's dream live. She carried the mantle of civil rights and opportunity for all and was a pillar of strength and support for Dr. King at home and on the civil rights trails. She stood with her husband hand-in-hand and continued to fight for equal opportunity after his death with the work at the King Center and other civil rights causes. A devoted mother to her four children, Mrs. King was truly the first lady of the civil rights movement and an icon. Coretta Scott King exemplified courage and strength. She will be remembered as one of America's greatness gifts."
