    National Urban League Hosts Second Women in Power Luncheon to Highlight Contributions of Eight Black Women in Positions of Power and Influence


    New York, NY, July 21, 2005 - Following up the overwhelming success from last year's conference, The National Urban League will host its second Women In Power Luncheon, highlighting contributions from black women in positions of power and influence in sports, media, law, politics and business, on Saturday July 30 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

    "We had such a positive response from last year's Women in Power discussion that we've decided to make this an ongoing element of our Annual Conference," said Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League. "In the 95 years the Urban League has been in existence, women have been in led our organization and our movement in general, and we're just grateful that we can recognize the contributions of these women and others just like them working towards empowerment and a level playing field."

    The theme of this year's conference is Celebrating 95 Years of Empowering Communities and Changing Lives and is expected to draw more than 15,000 attendees and over 300 major corporations, community organizations, and schools to the Nation's Capitol. The conference will be held at the Convention Center in Washington, D.C. and will feature the following women:

    • Michelle Miller (moderator) is the New York-based correspondent and fill-in anchor for BET Nightly News as well as correspondent for CBS Weekend News and CBS News "Up to the Minute."

    • Ursula M. Burns is President of Business Group Operations at Xerox Corporation a $12 billion dollar organization, consisting of six business groups: Production, Office, Supplies, Worldwide Manufacturing and Supply Chain Services, Information Management and Xerox's Engineering Center.

    • Marian Wright Edelman is founder and CEO of the ChildrenCs Defense Fund which has become the nation's strongest voice for children and families. In 1963 after graduating from Yale Law School she became the first African American woman to practice law.

    • Michel McQueen Martin is a correspondent for ABC News and has spent more than a decade covering politics and policy for the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. Her primary assignment is ABC News "Nightline."

    • Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey is President and CEO of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which has almost $8 billion in assets and awards grants and contracts totaling more than $300 million annually in support of programs and projects to improve health and health care in the United States.

    • Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton has been a civil rights and feminist leader who currently is in her eighth term as the Congresswoman for the District of Columbia. She was named by President Jimmy Carter as the first woman to chair the EEOC.
    • Briana C. Scurry is a goalkeeper on the U.S. Women's Nation Soccer Team and a member of the 2004 gold medal winning women's team at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece and the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
    • Honorable Annice M. Wagner is chief judge of the D.C. Court of Appeals and chairperson of the D.C. Joint Committee on Judicial Administration, the policy-making body for the District of Columbia.
    • Carol H. Williams is President, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of Carol H. Williams Advertising based in Oakland, CA, and has more than 30 years of advertising experience creating some of the most memorable brand building campaigns in recent history.

The National Urban League is the nation's largest civil rights and community based organization.
