Marc H. Morial President & CEO National Urban League Statement Regarding the Terrorists Bombings in London
New York, N.Y. - July 7, 2005 - "The vicious attacks in London today, like the attacks in New York and Washington four years ago, and the attack in Madrid last year, are the work of cowards possessed by a murderous fear. They fear progress in relations among human beings. They fear the fundamental reservoir of decency and tolerance for others in human beings. They fear the intelligence of human beings and their willingness and capacity to respond to the global imperative to improve the lives of human beings wherever they live in the world.
That imperative fueled the response of the peoples of the world to the great disaster wrought by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December. That imperative has fueled the G-8 Summit of world leaders, and the Live-8 concerts around the globe that preceded it. The music these concerts put on display was as eclectic as the performers and concertgoers who made them such an event; but the point is that, albeit the differences, everyone at these concerts was singing the same tune.
For all the death and destruction and havoc the terrorists wreak among the innocent, their actions serve only to show how pathetic they are and how powerless they are to frighten decent people and undermine the imperative that brought the G-8 Summit into being."
