CROSS BURNINGS IN DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA
New York, N.Y. (May 26, 2005)- National Urban League President & CEO Marc H. Morial and Keith Sutton, President, Triangle Urban League issued the following statement in response to the three cross burnings that occurred May 25, 2005 in Durham, North Carolina.
"We are saddened by the cross burnings that occurred in Durham last night and hope that law enforcement officials are able to find the responsible individual or individuals and bring them to justice. We also call on the Justice Department to investigate this hate crime. The burning of the cross is a sad reminder of the racial hatred that captured the South during the civil rights era of the 1950s and 1960s. It is our hope that the nation, primarily the South, has moved far beyond this act of racial hatred."
