NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE PRESIDENT MARC MORIAL CRITICIZES NEGATIVE COMMENTS
BY MEXICAN PRESIDENT VICENTE FOX ABOUT AFRICAN AMERICAN WORKERS;
CALLS ON SECRETARY OF STATE CONDOLEEZZA RICE TO ADMONISH FOX
New York, NY- (May 14, 2005)-National Urban League President Marc H. Morial issued the following statement regarding the negative comments made by Mexico's President, Vicente Fox concerning African American workers.
"President Vicente Fox's statement has regrettably served to reinforce stereotypical views of both Black and Latino workers in the United States and further demonstrates a clear lack of knowledge of the high unemployment rate among both African American and Latino males in many American cities.
Too many of us are working on economic policies to lift up all American workers, and President Fox's insensitive statements are not productive and just plain foolish. Our own Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice should communicate to the Mexican government that President Fox's statement was neither appropriate nor warranted." said Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League.
According to CNN, President Fox stated "There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work, are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States."
