NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE MOURNS THE LOSS OF MAYNARD JACKSON, JR.
Statement by National Urban League President Marc H. Morial
New York, NY, June 23, 2003—The National Urban League, its staff, its more than 100 affiliates and its more than two million constituents, mourns the loss of one of the most revered and cherished members of politics in America, Maynard Jackson Jr., who died today at age 65.
"Our condolences and prayers go out to his family, his friends and each of the people whose lives he touched, whether personally or through his work as the first black Mayor of Atlanta," National Urban League president Marc H. Morial said today.
"That he was able to secure a third term in Atlanta several years after leaving office speaks volumes to his capability, his magnetism and his role as one of our nation\'s most beloved citizens and shrewd politicians.
"Certainly, his push to open the doors of opportunity to black businesses in 1973, the year of his election, marked him as more than just a politician, but as a trailblazer in the fight for equal opportunity.
"It was this same determination and strength of conviction that saw him drive the expansion of the Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, the opening of the city\\\'s rapid rail system and Atlanta\\\'s selection as the city to host the 1996 Summer Olympics.
"Maynard was also a very dear, personal friend of mine, a family friend, and his passing is particularly sad for me. When I was Mayor of New Orleans, Maynard was a revered role model and a shoulder of support for me - and anyone who knew him knew what strong and capable shoulders those were!
"There is no question that the city of Atlanta and its citizens are better for his leadership, and that a great void is left in the lives of all who knew him."
