NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE TO HONOR CONDOLEEZA RICE, DR. FLOYD FLAKE, ALONZO MOURNING, EMMITT SMITH AND UPS AT 47th ANNUAL EOD AWARDS DINNER
League To Launch Five-Million Dollar Hall of Fame to Honor Corporations That Contribute to Advancing Equal Opportunity
New York, NY, October 24, 2003—National Urban League president and CEO Marc H. Morial today announced that the Urban League is honoring National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice; the Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake, president, Wilberforce University and senior pastor of the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York; Alonzo Mourning, star center for the New Jersey Nets; Emmitt Smith, NFL career rushing leader and running back for the Arizona Cardinals, and UPS (NYSE: UPS), the world?s largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistic services, at the Urban League?s 47th Annual Equal Opportunity Day (EOD) Awards Dinner.
The Dinner takes place Tuesday, Nov. 11, at New York?s Pier Sixty, located at Chelsea Piers at West 23rd Street and the Hudson River. "The Equal Opportunity Day Awards Dinner is our highest recognition of individuals, organizations and corporations who have helped to level the playing field, creating equal opportunity and access for all in our nation," National Urban League president and CEO Marc H. Morial said. "This year we are introducing the Five-Million Dollar Hall of Fame to further recognize the tremendous generosity of those donors that, during the course of their relationship with the League, have contributed $5 million or more to support National Urban League initiatives. Our newly inaugurated Social Enterprise Award recognizes the 21st century pioneers who have launched highly successful economic ventures and public-private partnerships that advance community development and social justice in urban centers."
Dr. Rice receives the National Public Service Award in recognition of her lifetime of history-making achievements, which include being the first female and African-American to serve as National Security Advisor, as well as her tenure as the first woman to serve as provost at Stanford University.
The Reverend Dr. Flake is receiving the National Urban League Social Enterprise Award in recognition of the youth/education, economic and urban development initiatives operated and sponsored by the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York.
Alonzo Mourning and Emmitt Smith are receiving the National Urban League Outstanding Community Service Award, presented to individuals for exemplary service to underserved communities through fundraising or other philanthropic efforts.
Mr. Mourning receives his award in recognition of his work to improve the lives of children through the Alonzo Mourning Charities and Zo?s Summer Groove, which has raised more than $1.8 million for foster care, youth centers and other charities. He is also active in the fight to raise funds and educate the public about kidney disease
Mr. Smith is being honored in recognition of his nearly two decades-long commitment to charitable efforts that benefit children, including establishing the Open Doors Foundation, which focuses on today\'s youth.
UPS is receiving the National Urban League Corporate Leadership Award for its exemplary corporate citizenship and social responsibility, with a focus on literacy, hunger and volunteerism. More recently, the company served as a lead partner in the Urban League?s Read and Rise Literacy and Information Centers, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education. UPS also sponsored the League?s early literacy public service announcements and the Scholastic Inc. The inaugural class of the National Urban League Five-Million Dollar Hall of Fame is: Altria Group, Inc., Bank of America, IBM Corporation, MetLife/MetLife Foundation, State Farm Insurance Companies, and UPS. Each year at the EOD Awards Dinner, the Urban League also inducts its Million Dollar Hall of Fame. The 2003 inductees are: Panasonic/Matsushita Electric Corporation of America for its twenty-two-year support of the Urban League movement, including the development of the National Urban League Video Network, a close-circuit broadcast network and live web cast (www.nul.org) during the Urban League?s annual conference.
Among the Five-Million Dollar Hall of Fame honorees, Altria?s support of the Urban League spans more than 50 years, including the recent initiative, Know Your Money, a curriculum-based, money-management program enacted through Urban League affiliates and the National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP). Basketball legend and entrepreneur Earvin "Magic" Johnson is the initiative?s national spokesperson.
Bank of America is a leading contributor to the National Urban League?s Breakthrough Endowment Campaign, initiated in 1998, with a gift of $2.5 million. Since 1998 the corporation has provided the League with the training, technical assistance and monetary support necessary to advance the homeownership programs enacted through League affiliates.
IBM?s partnership with the National Urban League began in 1945, and includes support of the IBM Job Training Center, a job-training program that that began in Los Angeles in 1968 with one Job Training Center. By 1992 the program had flourished into 34 centers located in Urban League communities across the country.
MetLife\\\'s support of the Urban League began in 1953. The company was one of the initial funders of the League?s Campaign for African-American Achievement, a community mobilization and advocacy initiative created to raise awareness and promote the understanding that "Achievement Matters." We are proud to announce the MetLife Foundation\\\'s recent grant of $1 million to establish the MetLife Foundation Healthy Communities Fund. The Fund will provide flexible funding to Urban League affiliates to support critical work in the health, education and economic development initiatives unveiled by new National Urban League President Marc H. Morial at the League?s Annual Conference in July 2003.
State Farm?s relationship with the League dates back to 1997, and, in partnership with the celebrated Tom Joyner Sky Show, currently includes Achievement Matters II, a two-pronged educational initiative that utilizes a radio advertising campaign and achievement rallies to promote the importance of literacy and achievement. As part of Achievement Matters II, State Farm also supports The Baldrige in Education Initiative (BiE IN) in three urban centers. BiE IN is designed as a framework for improving school performance and student learning by applying the "Baldrige Criteria" for organizational excellence.
