Gala Benefit Proceeds Earmarked for Education Initiatives
New York, NY, June 20, 2000The Apollo Theatre will be generating lots of heat this summer when Chaka Khan and Jeffrey Osborne take the stage to perform at the National Urban Leagues 2000 Annual Conference Gala Benefit Concert, scheduled for Monday, July 31 at 8:00 PM.
An exclusive performance for National Urban League Conference attendees, the concert will raise funds to support National Urban League programs, such as the Campaign for African American Achievement, a movement designed to boost the academic and social skills of African American and other children of color.
Event sponsors are Anheuser-Busch Companies, The Coca-Cola Company, Sony Music Entertainment Inc., Time Warner and Toyota.
Chaka Khan is one of the premiere vocalists of the 20th century. Since her arrival on the music scene in the early 1970s, Chaka has set standards in every new trend in pop, R&B, rock, disco, fusion, jazz, rap, hip-hop and even classical, collaborating with Jeremy Lubbock. Now a transcendent music icon, Chaka has perfected a style, stage presence and intimacy with her fans that keeps them stuck like glue. Celebrating her 25th year, Chakas career is still ascending.

Chaka Khan, Jeffrey Osborne and the NUL Page Two
The son of a jazz trumpeter, Jeffrey Osborne sang with LTD (Love, Togetherness and Devotion) from 1970 until the group disbanded 12 years later. However, he remained subject to the LTD contract with A&M Records, for whom he recorded five albums as a solo artist. His most memorable hits as a solo act include On The Wings Of Love, Don\'t You Get So Mad, Plane Love, and You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song). After a two-year hiatus, Osborne recorded Love Power a duet with Dionne Warwick, which rose to number 12 on the U.S. charts.
Tickets for the National Urban Leagues Gala Benefit Concert are available only to those registered for the Leagues 2000 Annual Conference, scheduled for July 29 through August 2 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. One-day registrations are available.
Conference events include a career fair featuring on site interviewing and applicant screenings, a voter registration drive and plenary sessions focusing on improving public education, advancing economic opportunities and increasing pathways to diversity.
