    Bright Lights, Big City: The National Urban League

    Brings its 2000 Annual Conference to New York

    Organization to Celebrate 90th Anniversary at

    Jacob K. Javits Convention Center July 29 through August 2

    New York, NY, June 13, 2000–New York City is sure to be a hot spot this summer when the National Urban League holds its 2000 Annual Conference at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from July 29 through August 2.

    Titled, The State of Black America: The New Millennium, this year’s conference marks the League’s 90th anniversary. The New York Urban League, under president and CEO Dennis M. Walcott, is the host affiliate for this year’s event. Bell Atlantic Corporation and Merrill Lynch are the conference sponsoring partners.

    Highlights of this year’s conference include a series of plenary sessions and workshops, a career fair, exhibit hall, voter registration drive, a health fair and an African American vendors marketplace. The career fair, exhibit hall, voter registration drive, health fair and marketplace are all open to the public, at no cost.

    Confirmed conference participants include Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman; Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder; former New York City Schools Chancellor and current director of the K-12 Leadership Institute Dr. Rudy Crew; Radio One owner and CEO Cathy Hughes and Vanguard Media editorial director Roy Johnson.

    In addition, entertainment icons Chaka Khan and Jeffrey Osborne will perform at a gala benefit concert on Monday, July 31 at the Apollo Theatre.

    Also on the conference agenda are activities targeted to young professionals between the ages 21 and 40, as part of a special agenda created by the National Urban League Young Professionals group (NULYP).

    The NULYP is a group comprised of Urban League Young Professional chapters located in cities throughout the country. The NULYP objective is to build awareness about the Urban League movement, promote social activism among the Urban League Young Professional’s constituency and draw more young people into the Urban League movement.

    Prior to the League’s Conference at the Javits Center, the organization’s NULITES (National Urban League Incentive to Excel and Succeed) program will host a Youth Summit at Staten Island’s Wagner College from July 27 though July 30. The theme for the Youth Summit is Achievement: Don’t Talk About, Be About It.

    Youth Summit activities include a college, career, health and information fair. Confirmed Youth Summit participants include Internet entrepreneur and DME Interactive CEO Darien Dash, StepSun Media founder and CEO Bill Stephney and Heart & Soul magazine fitness editor Nichele Hoskins.
